A new study suggests that melting glaciers and ice caps brought about by climate change could awaken dormant volcanoes and trigger volcanic eruptions globally. Researchers found that volcanic activity in the southern Andes increased significantly as ice caps and glaciers melted following the last ice age. Hundreds of volcanoes currently considered dormant could become active because of this phenomenon.
